Crusaders 24 - Writtle Wanderers 9
Crusaders moved into the 2nd round of the cup with what turned out to be a comfortable win over a fiercely competitive Writtle side.
The visitors had taken the lead with 3 penalties slotted over by Andy May and some heroic defending had restricted a rampant Crusaders to a single try scored by No.8 Pete Blinkhorn. Crusaders lack of discipline at the breakdowns was provingdf costly and from a Writtle quick penalty their winger had a one on one with Elliot, the Crusaders fly half proved up to the task and unceromoniously dumped the winger into touch. From that defining moment in the game Crusaders forwards began to reassert their authority and took the lead when following heavy pressure on the visitors line Dean Anderton crashed over for their 2nd try converted by Elliot 12 - 9.
Writtle's defence was once again severely tested by the Crusaders pack and their tenacious prop Henry Joy increased the home side's lead with a determined drive for the line, converted once again by Elliot 19-9.
Jonathan Payne making his cup debut at scrum-half relished playing behind the Crusaders pack and delivered a constant flow of presision passes to his fly half Elliot. His reward with minutes to go was to touch down Crusaders 4th try following a pushover 5 metre scrum.
Writtle well beaten in the end had contributed hugely to an entertaining match for the spectators.
