Crusaders 21 - Newmarket 13
Crusaders soon had points on the board with a textbook try within minutes of Newmarket kicking off. George King fielded the high ball and fed the ball swiftly out to Joe Long, the fly half's well judged kick forced Newmarket back in to their own half. Pressure at the lineout saw Rob Loon imitate his fly half and pushed Newmarket deep into their 22. Newmarket failed to clear the ball from the resulting lineout and King took advantage of some weak Newmarket tackling to power over, Triston Smith converted. Crusaders continued their good form and a strike against the head resulted in Ross Nichols powering towards the line from 30 metres out. The wing forward unselfishly fed Peter Blinkhorn who touched down for try number 2. Smith converted. Newmarket got back in the game with 2 well struck penalties from Jack Wade.
In the second half Crusaders were pressing for a further score and looked to have an overlap but an intercepted pass gave Brian Abbott an unchallenged 70 metre run to reduce Crusaders lead to one point. With the game on a knife edge Crusaders pressure finally paid dividends when fullback Smith joined the line to create an overlap and scored out wide. Smith converted his own try to give his side a deserved win.
