Came into this weeks home game against local rivals Wymondham with a very different side with players unavailable and 5 players being promoted to the first team. A big welcome to Rob Claydon for his first game for Crusaders and special mention to Connor who after 2 sesions moved to scrum half.
The game started with an early penalty to Wymondham which they kicked 0-3. The game was very close with both sets of forwards getting stuck in to each other. A good clearence kick from Wymondham saw slight confusion in the backs and the ball was kicked through from the half way line and a chase saw the Wymondham player just score to make the score 0-8 conversion taken 0-10. We were never out of the game and a good break from Gareth saw him just come up short of the line. A good move by the back saw Rob score on his debut 5-10 kick missed. We were looking the more dangerous of the 2 sides and could have scored again but good defence saw Wymondham hold out. Jimbo went down and had to come off with a nasty pull to his bicep(which will keep him out for the season get well soon mate). This caused us to move things around with Aiden coming on and Ash moving into the backs. Half time 5-10 game on. Chris who again had been good in the lineout also had to come off at half time after falling badly onto his back. This limited us in the lineout.
Both teams were fighting hard to make any progress. Wymondham scored from a very good catch a drive to make the score 5-15. From here on I can only say the spirit and will to win of the team shone through. A quick penalty from Chappy saw him break 2 tackles and pass to Ash on the burst and Ash was never going to be stopped 10-15 with 17 minutes left. Wymondham were on the back foot by now and some good forward play and quick ball from Connor saw Gareth put the perfect pass to Ash to see him burst over the line to score again. 15-15 Ross held his nerve and slotted over the conversion 17-15. Ross took a long penalty which fell short but brilliant chase by Steve D saw him catch the Wymondham player and with the support arriving we were unlucky not to score again. Wymondham had 1 more chance with a penalty which fell short and we cleared.
A great result from all 18 players involved the players stepping up not looking out of place. The team spirit and will to win and never give up was outstanding
